At a glance
Salou is a lively resort town on Catalonia's Costa Daurada, wrapped around the palm-lined Passeig Jaume I promenade and the pine-clad headland of Cap Salou with its lighthouse and hidden coves. It is best known as the home of PortAventura World — Spain's largest theme-park resort, complete with Ferrari Land — and for Carles Buïgas's illuminated musical fountain on the seafront. Compact and walkable, it makes an easy base for Roman Tarragona, Gaudí's Reus and the Priorat wine country. Spring and early autumn bring warm, easy weather and the smallest crowds.

Ride the record-breaking coasters at Spain's biggest theme-park resort, cool off at Caribe Aquatic Park, and take on the Red Force launch coaster at neighbouring Ferrari Land.
Stroll the palm-lined promenade to the Font Lluminosa — Carles Buïgas's colourful musical fountain — then browse the Torre Vella tower and the tapas terraces of the old town.
Follow the coastal path around the pine-covered headland to the lighthouse, past sheltered coves like Cala Crancs and Cala de la Font with clear water and quiet terraces.
Passport: A valid Canadian passport is all you need — it should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
Visa & ETIAS: Canadians can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. A separate ETIAS travel authorisation is expected to be required in future — check status before you fly.
Travel insurance: Provincial health plans do not cover care in Spain. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.
Power & plugs: Spain uses 230V/50Hz with Type C/F (two round pins). Bring a plug adapter for Canadian devices.
Time zone: Salou runs on Central European Time (CET) — six hours ahead of Toronto. Dinner is served late, rarely before 9pm.
Warm, sunny days and long evenings — the sweet spot for the promenade, Cap Salou and day trips before the summer rush.
Hottest and busiest, when Spanish, French and British holidaymakers fill the seafront and PortAventura queues peak.
Warm sea, thinning crowds and softer prices make early autumn one of the best times to visit.
Mild and quiet; some seasonal venues close and PortAventura runs limited dates, but the old town and coast stay open.
Where to stay
Salou is compact and easy to walk, from the buzzing central promenade to the quiet coves of Cap Salou. Here's how the main areas compare.
Central promenade
The lively heart of Salou — the palm-lined seafront boulevard with the illuminated fountain, Llevant beach, shops, restaurants and nightlife all at the door.
The headland
The pine-clad point south of town, dotted with sheltered coves, the lighthouse and calmer four-star hotels — a relaxed base with sea views.
West end
The gentler western stretch of seafront, quieter than the centre and popular with families, within easy walking distance of the promenade.
North Salou
The northern edge of town toward the theme parks, handy for early park entry and served by aparthotels and larger resorts a short shuttle from the beach.
Beyond the town
Roman ruins, Gaudí's Reus, cosmopolitan Barcelona and the Priorat wine country are all within easy reach by train, coach or car. Every excursion below can be booked through ShopTravel.
Explore Catalonia's ancient capital — the seaside amphitheatre, the circus, the forum and the Pont del Diable aqueduct, all UNESCO-listed.
Follow the Ruta del Modernisme past ornate Domènech i Montaner mansions, visit the Gaudí Centre, and taste the town's famous vermouth.
See the Sagrada Família, La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter on a full-day trip to Catalonia's capital, with time for tapas and shopping.
Tour the terraced slate vineyards of DOQ Priorat, one of Spain's most prestigious wine regions, with cellar visits and tastings of powerful reds.
