The Hilton story

Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda

Say the word hotel and a lot of people picture something Hilton built. That is not an accident. Conrad Hilton bought his first property, the Mobley, in a Texas railroad town in 1919, and the company he started spent the next century turning its name into a kind of shorthand for a reliable night away. Today that runs to more than 9,200 hotels in 144 countries.

For most travellers Hilton is the dependable middle of the market: a DoubleTree with a warm cookie at check-in, a Hilton Garden Inn by the airport, a Hampton when the budget matters. But the family climbs higher than that reputation suggests, up through Curio and Canopy on the lifestyle side to Conrad and Waldorf Astoria at the top, the hotels you book for the occasion rather than the location.

The newer chapter is sun. Hilton has been opening all-inclusive resorts exactly where the winter crowds already go, Cancun, Tulum and the Riviera in Mexico, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and it runs them under names travellers already trust rather than inventing a separate brand. It is a late entry to the beach, but a confident one.

The thread through all of it is consistency. A Hilton in Halifax and a Hilton in Bangkok will not look alike, but they will feel run the same way, and that predictability is the whole point. For a lot of people it is the brand they default to precisely because they already know what they are getting.
