At a glance
The UK is the easiest long-haul trip a Canadian can take: an overnight flight, no language barrier and a rail network that turns one city break into several. London carries the headline sights — Westminster, the museums, the West End — and rewards a base near a tube line more than a famous postcode. Manchester makes a cheaper, friendlier second stop, with the music and football history to match and the Lake District and Peak District within a couple of hours. Both cities work year-round; the weather is rarely the reason to pick a month.

8–23°C · mild and changeable

Language

Big Ben, the Abbey and a river walk past the London Eye to the Tower.
The British Museum, the National Gallery and the V&A — all free to enter.
Music, football and Victorian streets, with the Peak District an hour away.
Passport & ETA: A valid Canadian passport is required. Canadians can stay up to 6 months without a visa but must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding — apply online, it takes minutes and costs a few pounds.
Travel insurance: Provincial health plans don't cover medical emergencies abroad — comprehensive travel insurance is essential.
Power & plugs: Type G three-pin outlets at 230V. Bring a UK adapter; Canadian plugs do not fit.
Money: The UK is effectively cashless — tap your card or phone on buses, the tube and in shops. A contactless card also caps your daily London transport fare automatically.
Long days — light until 9pm in midsummer — warm weather, festivals and outdoor terraces. Book early.
Cool but pleasant, with thinner queues at the big sights and better hotel rates.
Short, grey days and the lowest fares of the year — though December brings Christmas markets and pantomime season.

Everything Canadian travellers ask before booking
No visa for stays up to six months, but Canadians must now hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they fly. Apply online before departure — airlines check it at boarding.
About 7 hours from Toronto to London, mostly as overnight flights that land in the morning. Vancouver is roughly 9 hours 30 minutes.
May to September for long days and the warmest weather. November to February is grey but cheapest, and December brings Christmas markets.
Rarely. Contactless cards and phones work on buses, the tube and in nearly every shop, and tapping in and out caps your daily London fare automatically.
Easily — direct trains run between them in about two hours, and both have their own international airport if you'd rather fly in and out of different cities.
