October Is the Secret Weapon for Smart Canadian Travellers
If you've been waiting for the perfect time to book your next getaway, October might just be your golden ticket. The kids are back in school, the summer rush has died down, and travel prices — especially for sun destinations — tend to dip beautifully. Whether you're dreaming of a beach vacation or planning a family escape before the holiday chaos kicks in, October 2026 is shaping up to be a fantastic month to maximize your travel budget.
At ShopTravel, we're all about helping Canadian travellers — especially those of us in the Toronto and GTA area — get the most out of every dollar (and every point). Here's everything you need to know about making the most of October travel deals, from leveraging loyalty points to snagging last-minute steals.
Why Points and Miles Matter More Than Ever
With the cost of living squeezing household budgets across Canada, travel rewards programs have become a lifeline for savvy vacationers. Whether you're collecting Aeroplan points, Scene+ rewards, or credit card travel miles, October is a prime time to redeem them — especially for popular sun destinations where availability opens up as peak-season crowds thin out.
Here are some top strategies Canadian travellers are using right now:
- Book shoulder-season all-inclusives with points: Destinations like all-inclusive Mexico and the Caribbean packages often have lower point redemption rates in October compared to peak winter months.
- Stack credit card bonuses: Many Canadian travel credit cards offer bonus points on vacation package purchases — use that to your advantage when booking family vacation packages.
- Grab cheap flights early: Locking in cheap flights now for a November or December trip can save you hundreds, even if you're not using points at all.
Hot Destinations Worth Booking Right Now
Not sure where to go? Here are a few destinations that are seriously popping for Canadian snowbirds and families this fall:
Cancun, Mexico: It's a perennial favourite for a reason. The weather is warm, the resorts are world-class, and Toronto to Cancun flights are widely available with competitive pricing in October. Browse Cancun hotels ranging from budget-friendly stays to luxury beachfront resorts.
Dominican Republic: Family-friendly, affordable, and absolutely stunning. Dominican Republic resorts offer some of the best value all-inclusive packages available to Canadians, with flights departing regularly from Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary.
Jamaica: Whether it's your first trip or your tenth, Jamaica all-inclusive resorts deliver that warm, welcoming vibe that keeps families and couples coming back year after year. October is a particularly sweet spot for deals.
Tips to Stretch Your Travel Budget Further
Even if you're not swimming in points and miles, there are plenty of ways to travel smarter this October:
- Check last minute deals on ShopTravel — sometimes the best prices appear within 2–4 weeks of departure.
- Compare hotel deals side by side to find properties that offer free breakfast, kids-stay-free policies, or resort credits.
- If you're staying local, don't overlook hotels in Toronto for a fun staycation or city break while you save up for a bigger trip.
- Bundle your flights and hotels into vacation packages — package deals almost always beat booking separately.
